What is Galentine’s Day?
Galentine’s Day is a yearly event that has been popularised by the TV show Parks and Recreation (in which I am currently watching and currently obsessed with – Beslie forever!) to take place on February 13th – the day before Valentine’s Day. While everyone tends to ho and hum over the “Hallmark Holiday” that is the big V- Day (and though Hallmark did cash in on it, Valentine’s Day is so much more than that – it’s also my wedding anniversary!) Galentine’s Day is the perfect day to celebrate the love of all of your closest gal pals!
Celebrating Galentine’s Day on Parks and Recreation featured Amy Poehler’s starring character of Leslie Knope gathering all of her lady friends around to talk about their love lives (or lack thereof) their romance stories and – even more importantly – their love for each other. Gifts are given, friends connect and as Leslie Knope declares it’s all about “ladies celebrating ladies”.
What could be a better reason to get Galentine’s Day into our national calendars? We ladies need some love!
How can you celebrate Galentine’s Day?
There are so many ways that you can celebrate Galentine’s Day – just make sure it’s girly and luxurious to the max! Go out to a fancy restaurant for a delicious breakfast of pastries and waffles (Leslie’s favourite!) or have a simple coffee and cake date at someone’s house. Treat yo’ self to an amazing dinner complete with wine and champagne, or do the ultimate girly get together and host a brunch at yourself with French toast, berries and pancakes.
Celebrate everything that makes women unique. Go to the day spa and get pampered with mani’s, pedi’s and massages or host a pyjama party and do it yourself. If you are a bit short on funds or ideas, you could even just go to the movies. Whatever you do today, celebrate with your girls and share your appreciation for them and you’ll be instantly transforming the 13th February into Galentine’s Day.
This Galentine’s Day happened to be organised by accident – and I couldn’t be any happier! This February 13th, my best friend Nicole and I will be heading to the local Lifeline Book Fair to paw through thousands of tomes, novels and stories to keep us set for another year. We both love books and reading, and are the only surviving members of the book club that I started last year (the other “leading ladies” didn’t die FYI, they just got too super busy for book club!) this seems like a perfect way to celebrate Galentine’s Day!
So no matter what you do, or how you spin it and celebrate, pull your girls in for the first inaugural Galentine’s Day event and share the love!
Let me know how you are celebrating in the comment section below and let’s make Galentine’s Day an actual holiday!
